Ways to help

Eyes on the Lake

Eyes on the Lake is the League's volunteer citizen science program to help prevent the spread of aquatic invasive plants in Lake Tahoe and surrounding waters. If you are a water lover in Tahoe (beachgoer, swimmer, paddler, SCUBA diver, boater) then Eyes on the Lake is for you. Volunteers identify and report on aquatic invasive plants they find in and around Tahoe, helping us catch them before they can spread to other parts of the Lake.

Storm Drain Marking

Be a Steward of Stormwater and help keep pollution out of Lake Tahoe! Most of the nutrients and fine sediment particles that cause clarity loss originate from roadways in our local commercial centers and neighborhoods. At each event, volunteers will: sweep the storm drain free of debris, pick up litter, install English and Spanish markers onto storm drain grates, chalk “SOS,” “No dumping,” etc., and learn about the impacts stormwater runoff has on Lake Tahoe water clarity.

Tahoe Forest Stewardship Days

Volunteers of all ages and skill levels are invited to this fun, hands-on restoration day. By pitching in, you are improving the watershed habitats that surround Lake Tahoe. Healthy forests act as natural pollution filters to Keep Tahoe Blue. What to wear and bring: sturdy boots, clothes that are comfortable and can get dirty and sunglasses. Bring a reusable water bottle and leather work gloves if you have them.

Pipe Keepers

Pipe Keepers is the League’s citizen science program to address the leading threat to Lake Tahoe’s clarity: pollution in stormwater runoff from the Tahoe Basin’s urbanized areas. Tahoe’s marshes and wetlands, which had acted as natural pollution filters, are diminished or gone so when rain hits our roads and parking lots, it washes off fine sediment pollution into stormwater pipes to the Lake, clouding its water. League experts train community members to collect stormwater samples from pipes throughout the Tahoe Basin, which we analyze for turbidity, an indicator of fine sediment.

Beach and Community Cleanups

Tahoe's beaches are an amazing treasure, but they often suffer from overuse, especially during the summer. That's why one of the League's strongest volunteer programs is conducting beach cleanups throughout the summer and fall.

How you helpWhether you're a visitor or long-time local, you can support efforts to protect and preserve Lake Tahoe now and for future generations by volunteering.
About usSince 1957, the League to Save Lake Tahoe has been the leading advocacy organization dedicated to the protection and restoration of Lake Tahoe. In the beginning, the League was comprised of a small group of concerned citizens who very effectively set the direction on which Lake Tahoe's planning efforts would proceed. Through the years, we have grown into an organization with thousands of members and supporters from across the United States. We have had countless successes over the years, but the challenge of protecting Lake Tahoe continues.
