Nevada Volunteers Receives Generous Volunteer Generation Fund
Federal funding will enhance volunteer partnership and collaboration across Nevada
NEVADA – Nevada Volunteers has received $216,810 in funding from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the federal agency responsible for AmeriCorps and other national service programs.
“Volunteer Generation Fund provides essential support to expand Nevada’s volunteer infrastructure, increase inclusion, offer grants to Nevada non-profits seeking to increase volunteer capacity, and deliver volunteer management program training and technical assistance to nonprofits,” Zanny Marsh, Nevada Volunteers Executive Director said.
Nevada Volunteers will enhance NVVolunteerConnect.com, its volunteer matching database to facilitate access for prospective volunteers who are native Spanish-speakers.
“The volunteer experience transcends culture, language, geography, and ability,” Amy Koeckes, Nevada Volunteers Commission Chair said. “Nevada Volunteers continues to offer opportunities that engage all Nevadans in volunteerism and service in the communities where we live, work, and share common values.”
In 2018, the CNCS Volunteering in America Report concluded that more than 30 percent of adults volunteer with an organization.
“Nevadans are generous with their time and talent and contribute generously to help a neighbor, school, or offer important service but may not consider themselves to be volunteers.” Marsh said. “Nevada Volunteers recognizes their individual efforts while promoting volunteerism and service across our State.”
Nevada Volunteers collaborates with Nevada non-profits to address the environment, unmet human service needs, access to health care, and the pandemic response, and offers NVVolunteerConnect.com to help prospective volunteers with opportunities to make a meaningful difference in their local communities
Every year, 75,000 AmeriCorps members serve through 21,000+ schools, nonprofits, and community and faith-based organizations across the country. These citizens have played a critical role in the recovery of communities affected by disasters and helped thousands of first-generation college students access higher education, tutor and mentor young people, connect veterans to jobs, care for seniors, reduce crime and revive cities, fight the opioid epidemic, and meet other critical needs.
AmeriCorps is funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service, the federal agency for volunteering and service, and recently marked its 25th anniversary. Since the program’s inception in 1994, more than 1.1 million AmeriCorps members have served the nation, providing more than 1.6 billion hours of service and earning nearly $4 billion in education awards to pay for college or pay back student loans. Throughout its history, Nevada Volunteers has helped members deliver more than 27.5 million hours of service and utilized more than $13.6 million in education awards to pay college tuition and/or pay down student loans. CNCS currently provides Nevada Volunteers with funding to administer AmeriCorps programs in the state.
