Ways to help

Trail Angel

Trail Angels, a person of exemplary conduct and virtue, are vital to the success of the Annual TRTA Thru Hike. Volunteer Trail Angels help participants have a more balanced and fresh diet, lighten their pack weight by supplying their duffel bags and resupply meals, and support guides with charged radios, and weather reports. There are six trail angel stops at designated trailheads during each of the two TRTA supported Thru Hikes, and the participants look forward to seeing a friendly face, delicious spread of fresh food, and cold beverages to quench their thirst. The TRTA supplies all of necessary equipment including a vehicle and trailer.

Office & Outreach

Office and outreach volunteers are really one of a kind. Listing all the accomplishments they continuously help staff with would be impossible. Major behind the scenes planning, winter projects and preparation, countless data entry, and admin tasks are just a few. Many of our office volunteers also help with outreach by educating community members on sustainable trail use as well as recruiting members to practice in trail programming.

Board of Directors

Strong leadership comes from the top led by our TRTA Board of Directors. The Board of Directors provides guidance, over-sight, and governance of day to day operations. Many TRTA board members sit on multiple committees and double as leaders of our programs. Without the help and sound guidance of the TRTA board the Association wouldn’t be where it is today.

Crew Leaders & Trail Workers

Not only responsible for combating the effects of day-to-day use but these volunteers help us respond to events such as heavy rain or wind that continues to make a significant impact on the trail annually. This is a vast undertaking that can only succeed with the dedication of our committed volunteers.

Volunteer Shuttle Driver

The Tahoe Rim Trail Association hosts dozens of on-trail programs throughout the season that requires driving all around the lake to numerous trailheads. Volunteers who are interested in becoming a shuttle driver should have experience driving a 15 passenger van and a safe driving record. Hours vary but expect most mornings on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from mid-June to September.

How you helpThe TRTA wouldn’t be what it is today without our community and volunteers. The Trail and Association exist because of the dreams and dedicated efforts of thousands of volunteers planning, building, and maintaining a trail around Lake Tahoe. Volunteers are the lifeblood of the Tahoe Rim Trail Association and we work to incorporate them into all aspects of our work.
About usThe Tahoe Rim Trail Association is a volunteer, non-profit 501(C)(3) organization established in 1981 to plan, construct, and maintain the Tahoe Rim Trail. he Tahoe Rim Trail is one of the most iconic and beautiful long-distance recreation trails in the world. This 165+ mile single-track trail is open to hiking, equestrians, and mountain biking (in most areas). The trail circumnavigates the ridge lines of the Lake Tahoe Basin, crossing six counties, four National Forests, three wilderness areas, two states and one state park.
